Birthday Present

Summary: Someone leaves you a birthday present on your desk.

Warnings: Angst, pining and yearning, but also some hurt, allusion to past relationship, allusions to smut, allusions to infidelity (possible/perceived? left ambiguous on purpose), reader is described as having hair that can be adorned with accessories, set in the Escobar seasons of Narcos (but which one/when is up to you), reader works at the embassy (my h/c is in Treasury because I only know how to write Finance girlies, but it's not important)

A/N: I've had a Javi P story swirling in my head for a long time, long before I even conceptualized Safest with You; but I'm fully committed to SwY right now, and don't think I have it in me to write another multi-chapter fic at the same time. So here is just a little angsty one shot of these two dummies; maybe one day I'll revisit and write the longer story for them that they deserve.

Multiple hands usher you to the office breakroom, where everyone from Treasury and several people from other embassy departments are waiting with a cake adorned with lit candles.  Someone dims the lights and the crowd starts singing “Happy Birthday” to you as you smile and welcome their kind attention.  After the candles are blown out and cake slices dispensed, you give your thanks after some small talk and leave most of the crowd to enjoy their midafternoon break.  Making your way back to your desk carrying the paper plate with your generous slice of cake, you’re surprised to see a small black velvet box with a red bow sitting on top of your files. Momentarily confused, you have to think back to remember that it certainly hadn’t been there when you left for the break room earlier.  You pick up the box and find it to be quite light; as you turn it over in your hands, you look around to see who it might be from.  Unfortunately, most people are either still having cake or just returning to their desks as you have, so there's no one who would have been around to see who left it.

You sit down and open the box; inside, resting on the soft black fabric, are two matching metal hair clips, each with a small, delicate looking silver bird adorning its end.  They’re beautiful and subtle, definitely something that would have caught your eye at an antique store – these were not purchased at any of the local souvenir stores near the embassy, that was for sure.  Your knee jerk reaction is to think they’re from Javier.  Among his many names of endearment for you, his favourite had been to call you his pretty bird. 

But you weren’t his pretty bird anymore.  No, you hold up one of the hand-crafted clips in your hand to admire it, these weren’t from Javi.  He had no reason to give you a gift with such sentiment.

Not when he hadn’t spoken a word to you in the two months since he had broken your heart; not even a word that night you had silently pieced together the scene in his apartment with the beautiful half naked woman on his couch and him standing in the living room shirtless, his pants unbuttoned.  You had apologized for interrupting before leaving your key to his apartment on the kitchen counter, then crying, made your way upstairs to ask the Murphys if you could use their phone to call a car.

You had felt so stupid.  It was entirely your fault for letting Javi break your heart.  You had heard all the whispered warnings around the office of Agent Javier Pena’s philandering ways; some shared as jovial gossip, but also some more bitter testimonials.  But that hadn’t been the man who had helped translate your clumsy Spanish with the Columbian embassy staff.  Or the one who had gently threaded his fingers through yours when unwinding from stressful days over long, lazy dinners. And it hadn’t been the man who had been too shy to cross the threshold of your apartment until you practically yanked him in and let him pull orgasm after orgasm from you until you nearly forgot your own name.  So you had ignored the murmurs about his reputation, allowing what had to be hubris to think it wouldn’t apply to you.  And you had fallen in love with Javier Pena.  You fell head over heels for the puppy eyed, baritone voiced gruff who cared more deeply about his work and the innocent people of Columbia than anyone knew; who had a tender heart that hurt every time Escobar’s violence touched lives that he, Javi, could not save.  With his words and his gentle and not so gentle touches, Javier had made you believe he had fallen in love with you too.  In the end, it must have simply been another weapon in his arsenal of charm to keep his bed occupied and his roster of rotating paramours never ending.  You had fallen for it, thinking you had somehow been special, when of course, you weren’t. Stupid.

No, Javi had no reason to think of you on your birthday.  The gift wasn’t from him.  But this certainty comes with another realization close on its heels: that despite everything, a small part of you wished it was.

Javi had waited patiently the entire day, peeking out the door of the DEA office he shared with Steve, down the hall to the big windows of the Treasury department to watch for when you would leave your desk.  All day long, people came by to wish you happy birthday, and you had smiled sweetly at everyone and thanked them for their felicitations. 

Never once did you look down the hall in his direction, but it had been months since you had done so.  It used to be a secret ritual between the two of you; when the DEA would rush down this same hallway for a raid or mission, you would lock eyes with him and mouth words of encouragement, a simple “Be careful” or “Come back”, and him countering “Always” with a cocky smirk, but eyes filled with adoration.  And he had kept that promise every time, always returning to you and proving his devotion over and over with his words, his hands, his mouth, his cock.  Worshipping you, really.  His pretty bird.  The most perfect creature to have ever stepped foot in the US Embassy; sweet, smart, a force to be reckoned with, but most of all, kind, and by some miracle, you saw those same qualities in him.  You made him feel like a better man that he was, and loved him for all that he strived to be.  He had never wanted to be separated from you.

Now he could count on the fingers of one hand the number of times you had addressed him directly in the last two months: once in a meeting and once while crossing paths in the Ambassador’s office - a polite nod followed by, “Agent.”

Agent.

As if you didn’t know his name.

As if you hadn’t cried it out over and over while writhing in pleasure beneath him.

As if you hadn’t whispered it following the three sweetest words he ever heard from you.

I love you, Javier.

I love you more, pretty bird.

And now it was “Agent”.  Now you hated him. But he still loved you so, so much.

So he had waited until your entire department had left for birthday cake before slipping into the vacated room and leaving your present on your desk.  He had seen the hair clips in the window of a little Columbian antique store while on a recon mission in a village outside of Bogota; thinking of you immediately when he saw them and how perfect they would look in your soft hair.  He had bought them that day, but the box had been sitting in his desk ever since, waiting for a way to make it into your hands where it belonged.

He knew he couldn’t give them to you directly, he was still unable to face you; he had already seen devastation and hurt replace what used to be love and admiration in your eyes the night he didn't stop you from leaving his apartment, allowing you to think he had cheated on you. He was too much of a coward to face those same eyes now and what he might see: disappointment, hate.  Impatiently, he hovers in the safety of his office doorway, waiting for you to discover your gift.  When you do, he watches your face go from surprise, to thoughtful confusion, to delight as you admire the hair clips.  Your eyes seem bright and a little bit sad as you examine the little bird decorating the barrette in the light.  He breathes a little sigh of relief when you ultimately smile and put the dainty accessory away, slipping the gift box into your purse.

Javier hopes you love your present.  He wishes he could help you attach the hair clips to your hair, but contents himself with knowing that when you wear them, you will be carrying his love with you, even if you don’t know it.

I have this WangXian fic I really loved but forgot to bookmark. Can you please help me find it? I read it over a year ago, so I can’t remember much of the details.

But basically, it happened after a huge war and LWJ was injured. WY found him volunteering at something like a refugee camp (?) and LWJ looked so sad and broken. I can’t remember much. But I know there was a lighthouse and WY took him there and eventually they ended up living close to that lighthouse.

So I'm looking for a fic where A-Yuan can see ghosts (you see, I think that is the series name 🤔) So this is ancient cultivators time. He calls the ghost his mama and sometimes draws a family picture. He would talk to someone they cannot see. LWJ thought it was a bad spirit but y'know Cloud Recesses is a safe place spiritually, he thought maybe it was just an imaginary friend. If I remember LWJ couldn't see WWX and later on realized it was him because some of A-Yuan's description became very specific. So the story goes like this: I was trying to name some of my 400+ yet unnamed Wajas and I wanted to name one 'Mistral.' It's a pretty name, it's a .hack character but also just a good wind name. But I needed to be sure I haven't used the name before, so I searched my folders for the word. Sure enough, a plushie in my Gaia folder is already named Mistral. I wound up naming the Waja Mistralina. I'm simply not going to be able to give unique names to literally every png creature I own, there are thousands of them.

But anyways, I was reminded of Mistral, who wasn't even a character. She was an inanimate object. I bought her from a Gaia shoppe that tied into a breedable/changing pet species called 'Llirins.' I don't own any Llirins. Just some of the plushies! That's a key distinction in the way B/C Pets work versus how Mini Shops work. B/C pets are uniquely colored and get certificates that show their name and owner, generally have multiple growth stages and can breed. Those take a lot more time to create and those kind of shops often take a lot of upkeep to track peoples' RP and breeding lineages and all that other stuff. Mini Shops are basically just sales of graphics. It can still be a pet, or it can be a toy, or a potted plant, or a sword. Anything, you buy the right to use a png and usually there's no further involvement between shop and customer. SOMETIMES there are customization options. Usually not. Multiple buyers can buy the same png, like it's a mass produced product.

But y'know, now that I've been reminded of Mistral's existence, I really like her. That's a cute red dog with wing ears. I decided to revamp her, and now she's a living plush. She doesn't grow or breed, and I think I'm going to just call her species a 'dragon' because it's kind of nondescript beyond being a plushie. I've refurbished her into an OC that can walk and talk and have adventures and isn't tied to a dead Gaia shop thread from 2004.

And then to make sure I can draw the design from multiple angles, I put Mistral (red), Miranda (black), and Mirelle (orange) together in a scene. They are sisters! I have a few other Llirin plush in my Gaia folders, but I don't know if I want to do more in this variety. I'll probably move on to something else. But I'm happy with these three!

I never do unless it's a specific question. I used to but then I got overwhelmed/I never knew what to say so I just stopped. That said, I read all of them and they really mean a ton to me!!!

Prob Running Late or Shoulder Pain. I'm not really good with angsty endings so I usually only keep it angsty in the shorter fics lmao.

Okay so Mango and Krissey and I started an amazing pirate AU and l adore it. And someday. We will finish it. I believe in us. I'd love to co-write a fic tho so if anyone's interested please hmu I think it'd be so so fun.

Ugh. Johnlock/Hmmk or Nrmt have to be like. The only ships that made me insane enough to write multiple fics over so it's def them. I love insanely codependant relationships.

There's so many. But off the top of my head, I have a fantasy AU that Beau and I came up with that I still love a ton (Finding You) and want to finish and a Edgeworth ends up in a Gregory lives AU (In Another Life) that I'm not sure if I'll ever finish. The former is just so much work and the latter I've kinda lost the plot thread so. Ough. Sorry.

I'd have to say A Study In Gold. I genuinely love that one so much. Thinking about hmmk early days makes me insane. I also really liked On the Morality of Birds b/c it was just such a supremely stupid fic.

I really liked that chapter because it really enforced the sheer gravity of what's going on in hope county, and I'd really like to hear your thoughts behind writing that chapter :)c)

So "Animal in Me" is of course the FC5 werewolf au that was always bound to happen. Werewolves are my favourite horror creature and of course there is a giant mountain man who is obsessed with wolves in game (I am a simple woman, when I see the low hanging fruit, I pick it) Anyways, this is my self-indulgent fic to the extreme including many of the time honored tropes of some of my fave werewolf movies, plus things that just make me genuinely happy to write and read (plus also playing with the ideas of A/B/O which I have never written before so fun experiment for me).

Generally when it comes to writing, I am a pantser and it was only in the process of editing that chapter that I realized I'd forgotten to add any plot threads about Dutch and Eli after having just introduced them a chapter previously (I was getting very sucked into my OT3 lol) and so adding in the pack being hunted and the mutation with silver bullets was an idea that sprung to mind in the shower that just needed to be written.

I have never been fond of silver bullets meaning instant death for werewolves, I think it’s an easy way of ending a story and I like the body horror imagery of being stuck between human and animal so I added in the silver having a mutating effect for the wolves in this case. I also didn’t want Jacob and the Seeds to be the only problem. It was one that I could resolve by having Kit join up with Dutch and Eli and to me that just felt like retelling the game story but with added supernatural elements, I wanted to change things up enough that it really was an AU. I also like the idea of having multiple antagonizing forces coming at Kit from all sides and this was an interesting way, at least for me, to do that.  I think the game did such a good job of making the Seeds sympathetic while still being monsters and I wanted to flavor both sides in that same way for this story. Yes, turning people and having them join your werewolf religion isn’t very nice, but neither is going out and hunting them for sport, which is the big reason why I chose to have a mother and son be the ones to show the effects of the hunters weapons on the wolves. There are always innocents on both sides of the war and of course it will have a big effect on plot points further down the line for Kit.

Kit becoming a werewolf and having two opposing sides to her was always going to be the end game, but I wanted to give her the added threat of someone thinking they are being righteous and good while gunning for her and the men she's fallen for.

 WRITING / FORMATTING.

I write. A lot. I tend to overdescribe and so my replies can get quite lengthy. That being said I do not ever expect you to match my length! Just give me something to work with and we'll be fine. I am fine with multiple threads as well, and also do not mind if you turn asks into threads. As for formatting I tend to use small text and a mix of bold and italics. My unrealistic wish for RE9 (feat. spoilers for other games in the series, fair warning):

...as always, warning that this is ridiculously long. That's just the norm for me, sorrrrrrrry ;_____;

Ideally, this would be back to a third-person, over-the-shoulder kind of game. my true wish would be fixed camera tank controls again lmao, but I'm one of the only people I could live with this being first-person again just for ONE last game to finish a "trilogy" of sorts, but 3rd person would be VERY MUCH preferred. I like to see my hot characters when I play as them, thank you very much

They pick up on the thread from RE8 with the B.O.W. soldiers sent by the BSAA, meaning this would probably be a Chris protagonist game. Which is fine with me, since I like Chris a lot and I think the games generally feel like they're in "sets" of three, so Chris being important in 7-9 feels right.

Basically, I'd want one big BSAA wrap-up game, before kinda... rebooting the series for the big #10. But I'll get to that later.

Jill would return too in some capacity, as she deserves. I know multiple campaigns are divisive in this series after RE6, so maybe just have parts where you are forced to shift between Chris and Jill. Not in a co-op kind of way, but kind of like when you play as Steve in CV or Ashley in 4, just on a much larger scale, you feel me?

Barry would be fairly old at this point, so maybe he could be on comms or something. Show up in a big damn heroes kind of moment at some point, or have his magnum be usable so it's like he's there. But he is with BSAA, so I'd like him there! And then it's also a (mostly) S.T.A.R.S. reunion, which would be pretty cool as a double reunion of sorts.

Sheva would FINALLY come back in a game. Like, holy shit, bring her back after all these years, good lord. Yeah, I get she's with the African branch of BSAA, but we had North American branch Chris in Africa with her in RE5 and NA branch Jill with European branch Parker in Rev1, so does it really matter? Not sure what kind of role she'd have, but I'd like her to be fairly prominent, and I'd like to see her and Jill interact more.

I think Parker and Josh would be super cool to see again too, but this is already bloated character-wise (and I'm not done yet teehee, you'll never guess why /s), and unfortunately I'm not sure that either was super popular, even if I like both of them. Give 'em at least mentions in a file or something for sure. what if Keith and Quint showed up. man, people would be PISSED if they came back but not other characters lmfao, though I actually don't mind them

Anyway, let's just do BSAA civil war. Who knows. The B.O.W. soldiers ends up being a breaking point. The BSAA characters everyone is familiar with are fighting against whoever authorized that decision, bioweapon shenanigans ensue, some kind of bigger villain shows up and ends up as the final boss.

And along the way - BEAR WITH ME, I KNOW I'M OUT OF MY MIND WHEN IT COMES TO HIM, SHHHHH - Piers comes back because of course he would in a game about the BSAA and B.O.W.s, RIGHT? RIGHT????? He just... floated to the surface after RE6 or something, dumber things have happened in this series. He survived because that C-virus strain was an advanced one or some shit, I don't really care how lol. They could be like "somehow, Piers returned" like Palpatine and I'd just be happy one of my two RE husbands carlos is the other for the record was back, no questions asked.

So then maybe he's not fully in his right mind and still kinda mutated-looking with his arm and eye and you have to fight him at some point. It'd be pretty exciting since you could get some good Chris angst from this (and he'd be even MORE pissed about the BSAA doing this stuff), and Jill could want to help Chris try to bring Piers back to his senses, just like Chris did for her when she was under Wesker's control in 5. It's like poetry, I know :)

Then by the end, you get some super cool team-up where everyone there (Chris, Jill, Sheva, Piers, maaaaybe Barry too at the end) does some sick posing and Death Island-type stuff, and the final boss happens. And... I don't know, I only have broad strokes dreams here lol. That's why I have issues with getting my fanfic ideas out, after all.

Now, I know some people would be like "doesn't this whole Piers thing cheapen the ending of RE6?" To which I say, "no." Because that game is over 10 years old, it's not like this turnaround happened immediately. Hell, I STILL to this day get teary-eyed at the end of Sonic Adventure 2 with Shadow "dying" despite him being in 20+ years of Sonic content since then, and LITERALLY RETURNING IN THE VERY NEXT MAIN GAME after SA2. If something is effective emotionally, it just is, regardless of what happens after, IMO.

But it's not like it matters, because it won't happen :( And instead we'll probably get some kind of BSAA drama, but not like this. And even worse, we might get another new protag, which frankly I do not want. I like new characters (most of my faves in this series are one-off characters lol), but Ethan does not instill confidence in me right now.

Back to an earlier point, though... I want this to be a big "yay, all the BSAA characters are here" thing because I need Piers so bad to wrap up that whole thread, then just pseudo-reboot the series. I still think making the games follow real life years was a dumb, shortsighted decision that really traps the plot and characters writing-wise, so I'd just start over after this. Do yet another RE1 remake, then move on from there in a new continuity. One that is NOT beholden to how much time passes IRL. And take the knowledge of what people liked and what people didn't to make new stories with the same cast (with some changes). Like, they know now that Luis was very popular after the remake. Do more with him. Do more with Carlos. With Ashley. With Piers. Introduce them in different ways. Stuff like that.

BUUUUUT again I know none of this will happen. I really do wonder where they intend to go with the series with the age issue with characters, though. This could've all been avoided (for a while, anyway) if they'd just used RE6 as a stepping stone for passing the torch to some of the younger characters (Piers > Chris, Helena > Leon, Sherry and Jake would kinda be their own thing and also I still can't believe they introduce WESKER'S SON only to do nothing with him after that like wtf, Sheva > Jill?). Too late now, though.

Also, if you read all this (god help you) and are thinking "you really want to do a 'finale" game without Leon in it?" My answer is yeah lol, I don't really care because it'd just reboot anyway in my dream world version of things, so you'd all be seeing Leon again anyway at some point. Plus, he has little to do with the BSAA, so yeaaaaaaah. It pains me not to include Claire too, but them's the breaks.

Ngl, I'm most interested in character-focused threads! Writing their development/characterization/interaction with other characters is more important to me than any overreaching plot, though that's not to say we shouldn't have an overreaching plot of some kind.

One of my few problems with adopting Tumblr as my social media outlet of choice is the way reblogging your own threads to comment on them means you get this slow explosion of longer and longer posts, and all previous versions still exist on your timeline.

This got long, so musings about the differences in how long-text posts work on different social medias and the trouble with writing them on ADHD continued under the cut.

So if you scroll down my Tumblr account after a bunch of writing, you see:

And this is annoyingly repetitive especially as posts get long. Which is a definite risk, I can type SO FUCKING MUCH.

And you might say "this is easily fixed: posts don't have to be short (this isn't Twitter) so just put all the content in one post", which, no. I have ADHD. Coming back in the room to go "AND ANOTHER THING!" is my modus operandi, you know? I can't think of all the things I want to say and just say them in one place and go "OK DONE" and click a button and let the internet go read it now. I don't know what I am going to say until after I have said it, and especially not what I am going to say next.

And I worry that the way Tumblr compounds your threads in this additive explosion means that the threshold for "this is too much of this punk" is much lower than other social networks, and that's a real worry for someone who writes as much as I do. I am happy to write endlessly for my own entertainment but I don't want to be annoying, and having to repeatedly scroll past multiple copies of my endless threads is going to get old fast.

Also on the subject of "one long post vs many short ones in a thread", splitting a post and continuing in a reply post/reblog has a functional use: it's like a paragraph break, but moreso. So it's good for indicating a break in the thought, to shift focus, or to take a tangent. (and as someone with severe adhd, my brain is 90% tangents)

Anyway I'm thinking I might do something weird like build a private mastodon instance and then set it up to sync threads to Tumblr.

Like, collect a full thread of small posts, turn them into paragraphs, and post that to Tumblr as one big post. It will work better, I think.

Fundamentally the problem I am facing right now is that Twitter is the best site for how my brain works. Individual tweets in a thread are a close approximation for how I think, so writing a long series of tweets is easiest for me. In that format, I can write. I can be creative. I can express myself.

And don't get me wrong: I love Tumblr. This is easily one of my favorite places on the web. But the "big open white page with plenty of room to write" model is not a good fit for my brain. I look at that and I can't get started. If I can get started, I can't finish, because I get bogged down in going back and editing and rewording.

Short small snippets in a row, like IRC or Twitter, prevent those problems. I don't have to think about the whole thing I'm writing, because I don't have room to write that. I just focus on the current line, and once that's done, I move on to the next. Did I misspell something? Could that have been phrased better? Well, too bad. That line is done now, you can only move forward.

Yeah this may not result in a work of literary genius but it at least results in something. I am not a great writer, I'm never going to be a new york times best seller... But I'm not aiming that high. Writing like this, as a series of short snippets and not going back to fix and re-edit them? It's the only way I can write at all. (and if you have ADHD that gets in the way of your writing, I recommend trying it).

I'd rather write in this specific and limited style than not write at all. There's too many ideas in my head, I need to get them out.

Anyway the reason I'm thinking about this now is that this is why I've traditionally been a heavy Twitter user (though let the record show that I have been on Tumblr for longer!). It works for that style of writing, so I could flourish there.

But it's dying. Oh God, is it dying. And I'm having to think about what to do next. Where to "go".

And as an aside, it's always weird how we always phrase these things like migrations. Like people are backing up their bags from site A and getting on a train to site B.

Maybe it's just my ADHD talking, but that's never been how I've used the web. I am in many, many places simultaneously, and have been for a long time.

I'm active, to different degrees, on Tumblr and Twitter and reddit and discord and mastodon and cohost and Facebook and LinkedIn and IRC and email chains and BBSes. The only thing that change if I "move" is how much I focus on one over an another. If I have a shitpost in my head, where do I decide to post it? If I want to talk about something more serious, where do I go?

Obviously with Twitter dying I'm focusing more on other places. I joked to someone on Twitter that I'm currently sharding what used to be my Twitter posts to Tumblr and mastodon: Tumblr gets the shitpostier and transier stuff, mastodon gets the techier stuff. But that may change as I find the right balance going forward.

Or, regarding my "persona Jubilee" post, I might just stop. I have been this Foone for a while, it might be time to stop and rethink.

Anyway, the final wrinkle in this overlong post: I wrote this much on Tumblr, despite all my talking about not being able to do it. I think I'm basically doing this by channeling my "Twitter thread mood" and not going back up and editing. Who knows if that means I've actually managed to overcome my previous inability to just write free-form long content, or if this is just a limited trick that I can't keep up. Time will tell.

Writing Update (07/10/22)

Hello everyone! I managed to write 15k words this week, which means Chapter 5 is currently 181k words.

I was hoping I would finish Esmerelda's scene this week, but unfortunately I got sick halfway through the week and haven't been able to do much.

Next week, I'm also moving (again) and will be without my computer for a couple of days or so since I have to send it in to be fixed. I don't know how long it'll take to get it back (could be three days, possibly up to a week), but either way it will undeniably put me behind on my writing.

I'm hoping this week to A.) Stop being sick and B.) Finish Esmerelda's scene + start the bedrest scene. If I can do those two things, or even just one, I will be a happy camper. I also imagine it'll put Chapter 5 right at around 200k words once I finish those scenes. All that'll be done before I can move on to the second half of Chapter 5 then is to wrap up some loose threads, and then it'll be off to the alpha readers! I can't quite give an estimate on how long that'll take, however, due to how much will be happening in the next week.

Once I finish the "first half" of Chapter 5, I can safely say we're on the home stretch. If you're wondering how that's possible, it's because Part 1 + 2 probably make up ~70% of the chapter. Parts 3 + 4 have much less scenes, but a lot more variation... and, speaking of that variation, I have some precautions in place for when it comes to writing it.

In the second half of the game, you'll be able to choose who you hang out with in a couple of scenes. For my own personal sanity and for the sake of getting this chapter done (and also just b/c it makes sense from a game design perspective) you won't be able to hang out with anyone who you don't have a friendly or better affinity with (with Nikke being the exception... kinda.) So even though I'll be writing multiple versions of a singular scene, I won't be writing multiple variations of multiple versions based on what your affinity is with each character, which saves me a lot, andI mean a lot of time.
